What about your thoughts on the game last night Bowker, or how we are playing generally at the moment. You've seen both the last two friendleys from a touch line perspective, as well as playing in the last one. So what do you think?

Some good points there Ally. But as it is only a friendly and like Batts says, it could and should of been a cricket score (I hold my hands up, Im partly to blame for that sitter I missed) I feel that the game was won at half time and that the team should carry on trying to play as they were. That would help improve on the passing, gelling and fitness of the team, in order for the team as a whole to improve for the start of the season.
Im sure we could have quite easily thrown men behind the ball and stopped them from attacking, but surly friendlies are all about experimenting and getting things right for the start of the season??

It was nice to see people playing the ball rather than thumping it. Brooks allowed us time to play, unlike Kirkheaton who were quicker into the challenge, but in a weird way it's good to play on our smaller pitch as it ensures that we have to concentrate on our first touch, then get our heads up and make the pass count. On the minus side having a small pitch means that it is easier for the oppo to turn defence into attack as we saw with their first goal yesterday, but again it is good experience for our defence/midfield on keeping shape and defending different 'phases' (word of the month) of play. One thing which we should have learnt from yesterdays exercise is that we don't need to dive in on attacking players. Their third came from a couple of loose non-tackles that had we just shielded would have prevented the attacker advancing into a position where he could shoot. Ali was right about them cheating, but Stevie G made a good comment when he came on in saying it's 'just a friendly, lets work on our own structure and not worry about theirs" - BANG ON, once the season starts and points are up for grabs tactical changes would have been made, but on a Wednesday night in the middle of August it aint needed. Spud had a good game and was vocal in a supportive way. He’s a good player to have at the club and it’s only a matter of time before our defence is being mentioned in the same breath as Ferdinand, Terry and Carragher. A good run out, just wish we had another game before next Wednesday!

Thoughts about last night?
We threatened to go under after their physical start to the game. But they just didn't have enough to take advantage of their start. And at the end it could have once again been a criket score. At least we are still creating the chances.
The midfield needs to start gelling sooner rather than later, at times we are playing with two free men. My perspective of these positions is that two players play as a normal midfield partnership - going forwards aswell as defending. The spare man sweeps up the bits, picking up the loose ball. At times we had Wayne going for a header with the other two players drifting away from that area, and away from the ball. As if they both were attacking free men. We can't afford this to be happening because we go from potentially overrunning their midfield to actually having one less player in there ourselves. Rich bray will know what i'm on about, I told him enough times last night...

We need to raise the bar at Honley this year if we are to emulate Meltham.
Is 'alright' good enough this year? With 23 potential first team players at the club there could be some upset players come the season if they don't pull there fingers out.
The defence were 'alright' last night, the midfield were good late on last night but were mostly 'alright', the wingers struggled to get in the game, the attackers were 'alright' and the finishing will win us nothing this year.
Honley need to stop settling for bloody 'alright' and start being bloody 'good'.
How many players last night would give themselves a rating of 7 or 8 out of ten?

It's nice to be able to watch your own team from time to time. You get to do your own player cam, very interesting results Batts! Last nights game wasn't a football game; it was never going to be. Until the last twenty minutes how many times did we do more than two passes to each other? Holmbridge came and played their football (kick em and run). Your observations about attacking the ball are right Jason but your understanding of the game?. When given orders by your manager you stick to them. Wayne was put asked to attack headers and the other two middle fielders drop off him, one in front, one to the side/behind. The reason - so you cover both outcomes, Wayne winning/losing the ball. Football is about eliminating possibilities for the opposition. How many times did Holmbridge (once Honley had found their feet) create good goal scoring opps? We, especially late on, could/should have had 6 or 7 more goals, but weren't quite 'bloody good' enough. Putting all the above to one side. Pre-season has been good, no losses, plenty of goals (at both ends!) but more importantly people are starting to believe in one another and within the management team. The buzz has come back to Honley and the enjoyment (against many people’s wishes it may seem) is creeping back in. However, pre-season is now OVER! Forget what has gone in the past - we could have gone out and won every game 10-0 and be now slapping each other on the backs in congratulation. SATURDAY is what we've all been working towards for the past 10 weeks and what everybody should now be focused on. Team gelling, players doing what others expect of them, players being bloody 'alright' or 'good' and all the rest of this psychological babble should not matter one jot on Saturday. One objective for Saturday’s game, WIN AT ALL COST IN ANYWAY WAY NEEDED - 3 points. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!

My understanding of it was that they had Damo and that skinheaded wanker both challenging Wayne- effectively two against one. The midfielders should have two going for it and one stood off picking the loose ball up. Let the guy on the opposite wing drift inside to pick up anything that bounces other that way.If it goes over them then the strkers pick it up.
We lined up the same way we lined up against Mount. One going for the header, one stood on the centre sport, one on the other side of the centre circle. It's as if the midfield don't want to challenge for the ball.
