Meltham Match report
Honley’s hopes of an outside chance of the league title ended with Sovereign Sports beating Uppermill but they avenged a defeat at the hands of Meltham last month with a narrow 2-1 victory. With keeper Wightman missing along with key defenders Worden, Murphy and Beardsell Coach Steve Green played himself at full back and brought back Berry into the heart of the defence and Rowling to shore up midfield. Refereee Fosbrook declared the pitch only just fit but both teams battled, as ever in Honley Meltham clashes, and entertained. Honley suffered a further loss when Woodworth went off injured on 20 minutes after a challenge from Meltham keeper Philpott. The home side won most of the early possession but Meltham took a half time lead when Woodhead curled in a free kick from the edge of the area give away by a rash challenge from Rowling.
In the second period Honley put pressure on the Meltham defence with Green prompting most of the attacks down the right flank and the pace of Bowker and Battye causing concern. Honley equalised when a cross from Steve Green dropped under Meltham’s crossbar and Bert Green seemed to nudge the keeper who fell over the line clutching the ball. Davies then went close on two occasions as Honley dominated through the tenacity of midfielders Bray and Rowling whose hard work won the midfield for the home side. The winner came late in the half when Bray’s corner from the right found Berry unmarked and his header was finished off at close range by Bert Green to give Honley the points.
Honley’s seconds continued in their neck and neck fight with Uppermill for the Reserve Division one title with a 2 nil win at Berry Bro, Howe and Knutton the scorers. If Honley win their final two games and Uppermill their one remaining fixture the two teams will play off for the title.
