Match Report - 18 Feb. Junior Challenge Trophy Quarter Final. New Mill Res 0-2 Honley Res
Honley’s second team, still stromg contenders for all three awards open to the league’s reserve teams moved into the Junior Challenge Cup semi finals with a comfortable win at New Mill. This was Honley’s fourth win this season over their opponents and despite a heavy pitch and an opposition who battled to the end the two goal margin could have been more from the possession the visitors had and the chances they created. Marcus Clough had little to do in Honley’s goal due mainly to another sound central defensive performance from Jimmy Green and Daz Bridge. After 15 minutes Carl Devonish ran on to a flick on from a throw in to volley home the opener. On the half hour full back Chris Brown had a cross cleared but followed up to hit a screamer past the home keeper. The rest of the game was fairly uneventful – Honley’s ‘manager of the month’ Andy Scotcher claiming the most exiting moments being the managers own appearance for the last few minutes of the game.
Honley’s first team lost some ground at the top of division one with another home performance where they could only salvage a point against a team from the lower half of the table. Honley opened lively and the visiting keeper saved well from Battye on the break. On the striker’s second breakaway he unselfishly fed in Rich Bray who blazed over the unguarded net from a few yards. At the other end Wightman made a superb point blank save to keep the score at 0-0 at the break. Honley dominated the second period, again! but failed to capitalise and it was the visitors who took the lead with the full back playing a one two and taking the ball round Wightman. Battye salvaged a point for Honley running on to Delooze’s 30 yard through ball and finishing low to the keeper’s right. Midfielder Storer was unlucky not to give the home side a lead scooping one effort past the upright and volleying Battye’s cross over the bar in the dying minutes.
Nicky Lee scored in the first half for Honley’s thirds against an experienced Lindley Lib Reserves outfit. The visitors took a 2-1 lead in the second period but Matt Hirst equalised with 20 minutes left.
The clubs ‘night at the dogs’ fundraiser at the Foresters raised £800 for the Cookridge Cancer Unit and the club thanks to everyone buying a runner, to those who gave prizes to sponsor the races, and to those supporting on the night.
